Hanging Kitchen Towel Pattern / Tutorial

In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a kitchen towel with ties to hang on your cupboard door, drawer, frig or oven. Coordinate the colors with your kitchen decor, or make several to give to a friend or as a hostess gift.

Supplies:
one good quality kitchen / dish towel (one towel makes two hanging towels)
fabric for the towel topper, 8 inches wide by 10 inches long
a scrap of interfacing or quilt batting 8 inches by 10 inches
fabric for topper trim and ties, 6 inches wide by 18 inches
 (or 1 1/2 yard extra wide bias tape)
iron-on lightweight fusible web
80/12 universal sewing maching needle
scissors, pins, thread
sewing machine, iron

Draw a pattern on paper and cut out.  Mine is 6 inches on the bottom, tapered up to 5 inches at the top, folded edge and is 4 1/2 inches high.

Apply fusible web to wrong side of topper fabric, following manufacturer's instructions.

When cool, remove paper.

 

Prepare the trim for the lower edges of towel topper and ties. Make your own, by cutting as shown, or use purchased extra wide bias tape (which is 2 inches wide when opened up).



Apply the trim and ties to the towel topper, pressing in place, then topstitching.

Note: Using the iron-on adhesive eliminates the need for a lot of pins and results in a neater project.

Prepare the towel. 

Add the side trim / ties. Press in place at the ironing board, folding in the edges, then top stitch in place. Sew across the ends of ties.

You're done! Go hang your towel in your kitchen or wrap it up to give to a special friend or family member.

Get creative with your next hanging kitchen towel. Use colors to coordinate with your kitchen colors or a friend's kitchen decor.
Make towels for the seasons (spring/Easter, summer beach fun or patriotic theme, Halloween/Thanksgiving, Christmas, snowmen in the winter).
